Messengers Elect Greenway Next KBC President

11/15/2011

FLORENCE – Adam Greenway was elected president of the Kentucky Baptist Convention during the afternoon session of the KBC Annual Meeting held at Florence Baptist Church at Mt. Zion.

Greenway, a former KBC first vice president, is a professor at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville and senior associate dean of Southern’s Billy Graham School of Missions and Evangelism.

Tim Alexander, pastor of the host church, nominated Greenway.

Also nominated for president was Derek Coleman, pastor of Gardenside Baptist Church in Lexington. He was nominated by Paul Sisk, pastor of Anchor Baptist Church, also in Lexington.

In his nomination, Alexander, who has been on medical sabbatical, praised Greenway for his service as interim pastor of Florence Baptist Church at Mt. Zion.

When he served as pastor of The Baptist Church at Andover in Lexington, Greenway "brought them a new vision … and cast it well," Alexander said.

In addition to his season as Florence Baptist Church, Greenway has served as interim pastor to five churches in Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio in recent years.

Greenway "knows and understands Kentucky Baptists well," Alexander said. "He is a tireless promoter of our King’s work across the commonwealth."

As he nominated Coleman, Sisk said he believed there is "a need for change" and that Coleman could "give voice to the local church."

Sisk said he has been concerned about the "pressure (from the Southern Baptist Convention) to do more with less" and "the loss of touch with those of us in the trenches."

A total of 646 messengers cast ballots in the presidential election. Greenway received 471 votes; Coleman received 173; two ballots were disqualified.

The first and second vice presidents ran unopposed and were elected by acclamation.

Alan Dodson, pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Lexington, was elected first vice president. He was nominated by Jim Castlen, director of mission for Three Forks Baptist Association in Hazard.

T.J. Francis, pastor of First Baptist Church of Walton, was elected second vice president. He was nominated by Josh Landrum, pastor of Knoxville Baptist Church in Williamstown.

Wilma Simmons of Ekron and Pat Reaves of Louisville were elected secretary and assistant secretary respectively during the morning session.

The Kentucky Baptist Convention is a cooperative missions and ministry organization made up of nearly 2.400 autonomous Baptist churches in Kentucky. A variety of state and worldwide ministries are coordinated through its administrative offices in Louisville, including: missions work, disaster relief, ministry training and support, church development, evangelism and more.
