Ky. Baptists Resolve to Prepare for Great Commission Resurgence, ‘Find it Here’
11/10/2009
ELIZABETHTOWN – Kentucky Baptists committed to support the Southern Baptist Convention’s Great Commission Resurgence and also signified their support for the Kentucky Baptist Convention’s upcoming “Find it Here” evangelistic campaign through resolutions passed during their 172nd annual meeting.
Five resolutions were presented by Paul Badgett, chairman of the KBC Committee on Resolutions, and approved by messengers during the Tuesday morning session of the Nov. 10 annual meeting at Severns Valley Baptist Church.
The resolution to support the Great Commission Resurgence underway throughout the SBC was put forward to underscore the importance of prayer for the Great Commission Resurgence Task Force and to encourage prayer “for a Great Commission Resurgence in our own hearts and lives so that we might all be effective witnesses for our Lord.”
The resolution also encouraged prayer for the search committees now working to fill vacancies in the top executive positions at the Southern Baptist Convention’s North American Mission Board, International Mission Board and the SBC’s Executive Committee.
The national task force was formed in June to study the work of SBC entities and institutions and is scheduled to report its findings at or before the annual meeting of the SBC in Orlando, Fla., June 15-16, 2010.
The approved resolution for support of the “Find it Here” campaign called for Kentucky Baptists to pray for the evangelistic effort and to do their part in sharing the gospel message with households across Kentucky next spring.
“Find it Here” is a major evangelistic push aimed at helping Kentucky Baptists fulfill the Great Commission in the state by sharing the gospel with up to 1.5 million households. Some 50,000 volunteers from the more than 2,400 Kentucky Baptist churches will be delivering a bag with a gospel presentation and brochure from their church to the homes in their area.
“Find it Here: Sharing Christ Across Kentucky” is the theme of this year’s annual meeting, designed to continue raising awareness and support for the major campaign.
Messengers also approved a resolution on the sanctity of human life in healthcare. The resolution calls on President Obama and Congress to ensure that in any healthcare legislation that is passed and signed by the president not include federal funding for abortion, and that respect for “life in all of its stages” be maintained.
The resolution also asserts that no doctor, hospital or medical provider be required to offer abortion services or reduce care given to end-of-life patients in order to receive licensure or become eligible for federal funding. Kentucky Baptists also further resolved to pray for government officials as they “deal with this highly complex issue.”
A related resolution was passed to affirm the Baptist Healthcare System, a partnering organization with the KBC. By approving the resolution, Kentucky Baptists expressed gratitude for medical care given to Kentuckians through the Baptist Healthcare System, as well as the financial support given by Baptist Healthcare System to encourage Kentucky Baptist pastors and their wives through the annual Shepherding the Shepherd conference.
A resolution calling for the appreciation of Severns Valley Baptist Church as annual meeting host was also passed.
