LOUISVILLE – The Kentucky Baptist Convention has collected 9,650 “Buckets of Hope” containing a total of nearly 300,000 pounds of food for Haitians devastated by the January earthquake.
The buckets were donated by Kentucky Baptists and other Kentuckians who wanted to make a difference, said Coy Webb, disaster relief associate for the KBC. Each five-gallon bucket contained food supplies such as rice, flour, beans and peanut butter.
According to Webb, the buckets were gathered at specified collection points across the state before being transported to a warehouse at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville during the week of March 15. From there, the buckets were packed onto trucks for transport to Miami, Fla., where they are currently awaiting shipment to Haiti.
The seminary donated the shrink wrap and volunteer time towards the effort, and a local vendor in Southern Indiana supplied the pallets at no charge, said Webb.
The “Buckets of Hope” project is being coordinated nationally by the Southern Baptist Convention’s North American Mission Board (NAMB). According to a report from NAMB, approximately 135,000 buckets have been collected across the nation.
Participating in “Buckets of Hope” is just one of the ways Kentucky Baptists are responding to the devastation in Haiti. The KBC is sending a demolition and recovery team to Haiti from April 5-12, as well as a medical team from April 17-25.
Additional Kentucky Baptist disaster relief teams will be needed in the coming months, said Webb.
The KBC is also accepting monetary donations through a designated fund for the Haiti relief effort. Contributions may be sent to the KBC, P.O. Box 856300, Dept. 124, Louisville, KY 40285-9900. Please note “Haiti Earthquake” in the check memo. Online donations are also being accepted at www.kybaptist.org/dr.
Kentucky Baptists are part of a larger network of Southern Baptist volunteers trained to respond to disasters by manning mass feeding operations, using chainsaws to clear downed trees and limbs, clear mud out of flooded homes and more. Together, Southern Baptists comprise the third largest relief organization in the United States.
