Kentucky Baptists Mobilize To Help Iowans Affected By Floods

08/20/2010

LOUISVILLE—Kentucky Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers are preparing to assist Iowans affected by recent floods.

According to KBC Disaster Relief Associate Coy Webb, a team of “mud-out” volunteers and a chaplain are expected to arrive in the Hawkeye state early next week to help residents clean out their flooded homes. Leaders in Ames have said the flooding is the worst in the history of that central Iowa community. About nine inches of rain fell in three days.

Webb said more volunteers could be needed in Iowa, as well as Tennessee in Illinois, states also hit by flooding recently.

Through Kentucky Baptist Disaster Relief, more than 7,000 individuals have been trained to respond to natural and man-made crises with an array of services. Feeding units can provide thousands of meals on short notice. Volunteers in other units can move in with chainsaws to remove debris, remove mud from flooded homes and provide other assistance.

Kentucky Baptists are part of a larger network of Southern Baptist volunteers that comprise the third largest relief organization in the United States.
